PETL Green Space

As educators we need to be concerned about reducing the environmental impact to our planet.  We teach about environmental issues in our classrooms but need to take an active part by being role models for our students and in our communities.

As unionists in an educational role, we have the added responsibility to set an example to show that we care and are doing our part to preserve our future and the future of those who we teach.

PETL is committed to reducing our carbon footprint on the environment.

1. The Local continues to explore ways to reduce our reliance on paper and utilize technology. An All-Member email to communicate with members is one way that the Local is attempting to help to reduce the use of paper.  Members are encouraged to use the website to find information on the Member's secure area. Once up and running, members will be able to register for workshops on-line.

2. The Local supports Bullfrog Power, a renewable energy provider.

3. We have installed environmentally-friendly water faucets to reduce water consumption, and a water cooler that filters the tap water. This is an attempt to eliminate the use of bottled water.

4. As this is a business office, composting is not offered through our waste management company. We have arranged with an Executive member to pick up the composting once a week. He is using the compost for his garden.

5. As you are aware, many takeout containers can not be recycled. A chart has been posted in the kitchen to show which containers are recyclable and which ones are not. Alternative food providers, such as using catering companies, are encouraged.

6. We are investigating the use of light sensors to reduce energy consumption. We are in the process of contacting companies to get more information regarding light sensors. In the mean  time, signs have been posted on light fixtures to remind people to turn off the lights when leaving a room.

7. We are investigating the installation of low flush toilets to reduce water consumption. We will be contacting companies for more information regarding this matter.

8. An environmental policy for PETL will be proposed and posted on our new website.
