A message from President Sam Hammond: Tragedy in Haiti

People from around the world have been shocked by the horrific tragedy that continues to unfold in Haiti.

More than 100,000 Haitians have perished and thousands more have suffered life-threatening injuries following the most severe earthquake to hit the island in 200 years.

Survivors are without medical aid and in desperate need of food, water, and shelter. There is an urgent need for humanitarian aid from the world community.

The Elementary Teachers? Federation of Ontario has responded with an initial disaster relief donation of $10,000 to The Canadian Red Cross to support rescue and rebuilding efforts. This was followed by a $5,000.00 donation to Global Medic.

Elementary teachers are known for their humanitarian support of people in need, both here in Canada and abroad. I urge our 73,000 members to again open their hearts, and their wallets, and contribute to this urgent cause.

Donations can be made to the Canadian Red Cross at www.redcross.ca and Doctors Without Borders/ Médecins Sans Frontières at www.msf.ca.

You can also contact the Canadian Red Cross at 1-800-418-1111 and Doctors Without Borders at 1-800-982-7903.

Please help. This tragedy in Haiti cries out for an immediate response.

Sam Hammond,
ETFO President
